How to Get Involved
The Alameda Food Bank is run by unpaid volunteers, led by a full time Director and a full time Program Coordinator. Volunteering at the Food Bank provides an opportunity to assist people in our community with some of their most fundamental needs. Our programs are ideal for individuals and families who live in the City of Alameda. Following is a list of volunteer opportunities at the Alameda Food Bank. All of these positions require at least a six-month commitment. If a position you are interested in is not open at this time, please check back here since volunteers’ schedules can change.
OPEN Home delivery driver. Deliver nonperishable food to half a dozen homes within Alameda in your own vehicle.
Requires lifting and possible stair climbing. This volunteer position is key to ensuring our home-bound food bank clients get needed groceries each month.
First Saturday of each month; food to be picked up at the AFB warehouse between 9:30 AM-noon and delivered to clients no later than 4 PM.
OPEN Safeway Pick-Up. Drive the Alameda Food Bank van to pick up once a week donations at Safeway store(s) in Alameda.
Ideal Volunteer: Clean DMV record for 5 years & ability to lift 50 lbs. Great for two people.
CLOSED Trader Joe’s Pick-Up. Drive the Alameda Food Bank van to pick up once a week donations at the Trader Joe’s at South Shore in Alameda.
Ideal Volunteer: Clean DMV record for 5 years & ability to lift 50 lbs.
CLOSED Grocery box packer. Pack boxes of nonperishable goods for distribution. Requires standing and some lifting.
Mon., Wed. and Fri., 10:30 AM-1:30 PM and 12:30-4:30 PM; Tuesdays, 11 AM-3 PM and 4-7 PM.
OPEN Grocery Pick-Up: Monday and Wednesday shifts. Work with a partner to pick up food bank donations from the Alameda Lucky and Target stores each week.
Volunteers need to have a valid driver’s license and clean DMV record. Requires some lifting.
Mon., Wed. and Fri., 10:30 AM-12:30 PM.
CLOSED General Help. Assists in unloading perishable and nonperishable food. Packs groceries as needed. Assists other volunteers with heavy lifting. Breaks down cardboard. Assits staff with transfer of food and cardboard between warehouse and distribution center. Ability to lift 40 lbs. repeatedly required.
Mon, Wed, Fri., 2-5:30 PM; Wed., Fri., 10 AM-1:30 PM.
OPEN Weekly Restock Crew. Assist warehouse staff and volunteers with restocking nonperishable food at the pantry, starting out at the AFB warehouse.
Requires heavy lifting and standing. Three years of a clean driving record preferred but not required.
Tuesdays, 7:30-11 AM.
CLOSED Administrative Support/Office Management Volunteer. Ensures that the AFB office is organized and professional, does simple data entry, answers phone and in person inquiries, organizes, files.
Ideal Volunteer: Previous experience with office management, office technology, enjoys details and organization.
Fridays, 9-11 AM or noon.
CLOSED Produce Packer. Receive and prepare Trader Joe’s donations.
Ideal Volunteer: Organizational skills, ability to lift 40 lbs. No client contact.
Mon., Wed., Fri., 10:30 AM-1:30 PM; Tues., 11 AM- 3 PM; Thurs., 12-3 PM.
CLOSED Produce Table. Prepare produce for distribution. Assist clients in shopping for produce.
Ideal Volunteer: Friendly, loves fruits and vegetables, organizing skills. Much client contact.
Mon., Wed., Fri., from 12:30-4:30 PM; Tues., 4-7 PM; Sat., 10 AM-2 PM.
CLOSED Saturday Pantry Staff. Receive and prepare Trader Joe’s donations; assist clients with food selection.
High client contact.
Second and third Saturdays, 10 AM-2 PM.
CLOSED Writer/Editor: Work from home drafting donor appeal letters, grants and other communications.
Ideal Volunteer: Self-starter with excellent writing and editing skills who likes to work independently, sees projects through to completion by due dates; ability to interpret and report on data a plus.
No set times.
OPEN Grants Researcher: Work from home conducting internet searches to find potential corporate and foundation donors and to make initial contact.
Ideal Volunteer: Self-starter who loves to use the internet to do research; can make contact with potential funders and evaluate the prospects.
