How to Get Involved
The Alameda Food Bank is run by unpaid volunteers, led by a full time Director and a full time Program Coordinator. Volunteering at the Food Bank provides an opportunity to assist people in our community with some of their most fundamental needs. Our programs are ideal for individuals and families who live in the City of Alameda. If you live outside of Alameda, you may wish to visit helpnow.org or volunteermatch.org for opportunities in your community.
Following is a list of volunteer opportunities at the Alameda Food Bank. All of these positions require at least a six-month commitment. If a position you are interested in is not open at this time, please check back here since volunteers’ schedules can change. OPEN Grocery Pick-Up (Assistant Driver): Monday and Friday, 8:30-11 AM shift. Work with a partner to pick up food bank donations from the Alameda Lucky and Target stores each week.
Volunteers need to have a valid driver’s license and clean DMV record. Requires some lifting.
OPEN Trader Joe’s Pick-Up: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:30-10:30 AM shifts. Drive the Alameda Food Bank van to pick up once-a-week donations at the Trader Joe’s at South Shore in Alameda.
Ideal Volunteer: Clean DMV record for 5 years; ability to lift 50 lbs.
OPEN Personal Shopper: Monday 1-4 PM shift. Helps clients with their shelf stable shopping selection. Involves high client contact and requires you to be able to stand for a few hours and directly helping shoppers pick out the groceries. Good customer service skills necessary.
OPEN Friday Driver: Tuesday 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM shift. Work with a partner to pick up from Safeway and deliver to our pantry. Volunteers need to have a valid driver’s license and clean DMV record. Requires some lifting.
OPEN Esperanza Assistant: Third Tuesday of each month, 2-5 PM shift. Work with a partner to help with food distribution at Esperanza Plaza.
Requires some lifting.

Policy on Youth Volunteers
The Alameda Food Bank welcomes youth volunteers at our First Saturday/CFS program the first Saturday of each month, 9 AM to 1 PM at our warehouse at 650 West Ranger Ave in Alameda. Please note that this is not a drop-in volunteer opportunity and is by appointment only. If interested, you must email or call (510-523-5850) the Alameda Food Bank to reserve a spot.
The warehouse is a space for professional food storage by designated professional staff and volunteers, and as such, is not always safe for youth and children. Therefore:
- Volunteers must be at least 12 years old.
- Volunteers who are 12 to 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian the entire volunteer shift.
- Volunteers who are 16-17 years old must have a letter from a parent/guardian giving them permission to volunteer without supervision of adults.
