How to Get Involved
The Alameda Food Bank is run by unpaid volunteers, led by a full time Director and a full time Program Coordinator. Volunteering at the Food Bank provides an opportunity to assist people in our community with some of their most fundamental needs. Our programs are ideal for individuals and families who live in the City of Alameda. If you live outside of Alameda, you may wish to visit helpnow.org or volunteermatch.org for opportunities in your community.
OPEN Check-in: Mon., Wed., Fri., 1-4 PM and Tuesday 4:30-6:30 PM shifts. Check in clients to record receipt of food using our database.
Involves high client contact and requires comfort with using a computer. Good customer service skills necessary.
OPEN Grocery Pick-Up (Assistant Driver): Monday and Friday, 8:30-11 AM shift. Work with a partner to pick up food bank donations from the Alameda Lucky and Target stores each week.
Volunteers need to have a valid driver’s license and clean DMV record. Requires some lifting.
OPEN New Client Intake: Thursday 12-2 PM shift. Complete intake of our clients as we travel to 2 different senior centers in Alameda helping those who can’t come to our regular programs.
Requires comfort with using a computer and sensitivity for people under stress.
OPEN Produce Packer: Thursday 12-2 PM shift. Receive and prepare Trader Joe’s donations.
Ideal Volunteer: Organizational skills, ability to lift 40 lbs. No client contact.
OPEN Produce Table: Mon., Wed., Fri., 1-4 PM and Tuesday 4:30-6:30 PM shifts. Prepare produce for distribution. Assist clients in shopping for produce.
Ideal Volunteer: Friendly, loves fruits and vegetables, organizing skills. Much client contact.
OPEN Selection Desk: Mon., Wed., Fri., 1-4 PM and Tuesday 4:30-6:30 PM shifts. Assist clients in selecting food items from a list. Collect required signatures from those who are USDA eligible. Set up documents for clients’ use at another program.
Involves high client contact, so good customer service skills necessary. Chinese bilingual a plus.
OPEN Trader Joe’s Pick-Up: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:30-10:30 AM shifts. Drive the Alameda Food Bank van to pick up once-a-week donations at the Trader Joe’s at South Shore in Alameda.
Ideal Volunteer: Clean DMV record for 5 years; ability to lift 50 lbs.

Policy on Youth Volunteers
The Alameda Food Bank welcomes youth volunteers at our First Saturday/CFS program the first Saturday of each month, 9 AM to 1 PM at our warehouse at 650 West Ranger Ave in Alameda. Please note that this is not a drop-in volunteer opportunity and is by appointment only. If interested, you must email or call (510-523-5850) the Alameda Food Bank to reserve a spot.
The warehouse is a space for professional food storage by designated professional staff and volunteers, and as such, is not always safe for youth and children. Therefore:
- Volunteers must be at least 12 years old.
- Volunteers who are 12 to 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian the entire volunteer shift.
- Volunteers who are 16-17 years old must have a letter from a parent/guardian giving them permission to volunteer without supervision of adults.
